OHA Annual Meeting and State Sale
The Oklahoma Hereford Association (OHA) held it’s annual meeting on November 18
at the Treasure Valley Microtel Hotel near Davis. Over 100 members, women’s
auxiliary, junior members and guests were present. The annual business meeting,
annual reports and several awards were presented. Following is a pictorial
review of the 2007 OHA meeting. The Herefords in Native America sale held
Monday, Nov. 19th featured 69.75 lots averaging $2,459 with a sale gross of
$171,525. The sale was, once again, a big success and a great opportunity to
purchase quality Hereford genetics.

President ’s Perspective
This is the time of year in
which we reflect on what a great year 2007 was for us. We are reminded
of how blessed we were with an abundance of moisture which gave us a
good growth of forage going into the winter. Maybe we won’t have to haul
hay to those cows until late winter.
Hereford breeders continue to do very well with the annual sales. I have
attended several throughout the year and they have been well attended.
The demand for those good Hereford bulls has been very good. The bred
heifers have been in great demand also. I have received numerous calls
from those looking for good Hereford females or Hereford bulls for their
black cows.
The Hereford booth was displayed at many events during the year which
has proved to be very effective in helping promote the Hereford breed.
Much information has been shared and a lot of material has been given
out. While serving at the booth during recent Tulsa Farm Show there were
many inquiries as to where people could buy those good Hereford bulls
and cows. I came away assured it is a great time to be in the Hereford
business. The past year also saw CHB launched in Oklahoma’s United
Supermarkets with a boost in sales and awareness of CHB.
Our annual meeting and banquet was held on November 18 at the Microtel
Inn in Davis Okla. The event was well attended and a great time was had
by all. Dan and Nancy Bowling from Blackwell were presented the OHA Hall
of Fame Award. They own and operate the Bowling Hereford Ranch, which
has been in operation for 75 years. The award was presented by Haskell
Hammontree, a longtime friend of Dan’s. Jim Birdwell presented the
Breeder of the Year Award to Charles and Karen Gray. The Gray’s have a
cattle operation at Edmond as well as their main operation in western
Oklahoma. They market cattle privately as well as in an annual sale. The
OHA Heritage Award was presented to A.J. Smith, editor of Oklahoma
Cowman magazine. A.J.’s friendship and expertise in helping to promote
our breed is valued by all Oklahoma Hereford breeders. His award was
presented by Eddie Sims, a good friend and college roommate.
Plaques of appreciation were presented to outgoing OHA Directors Warren
Sidwell, Wes Hardin, Haskell Hammontree, Charles Spencer and Bill
Thomason. New board members elected were Jimmie Johnson, Max Stotz, JC
Andras, Tony Yates and Van Messner. Dan Moser, Kansas State University
geneticist, was our evening speaker and gave a very informative
presentation on the value of DNA testing.
Our annual sale, “Herefords in Native America” was held November 19th at
the historic Jacobs Ranch. It was a great day and excellent set of
cattle were offered for sale. We enjoyed a good crowd and active
bidding. Bulls averaged $2,481 and females averaged $2,422.
We now set our sights on 2008. One of our priorities should be to
increase our membership, which will enhance the strength of our
organization. Above all commit ourselves to providing the beef industry
with the best so we can say with conviction, “It’s Hereford time!”

Hereford Women
Happy New Year!
Every year I say, “I can’t believe another year has past.” It is amazing to me
how time flies, and how fast our kids grow to young adults.
2008 is a time of change; the HWO is excited to have a new president for our
organization. Sherri Smith is not new to the Hereford family, but has accepted
the challenge of becoming the head of our women’s group. Sherri has contributed
a lot to the Oklahoma Hereford Association, as well as the American Hereford
Women’s Organization. Sherri is active both past and present in support of
Oklahoma Juniors. The HWO is in capable hands with Sherri as our new President,
and the continued support of our members.
This year the HWO held it’s annual meeting at the Oklahoma Hereford
Association’s meeting and banquet. The HWO meeting was called to order at the
end of the banquet and we had several women stay for the meeting. Thank you for
your interest and support.
As you know, one area that the Hereford Women support and encourage is the
Oklahoma Junior Hereford Members. This year we added financial support to help
send two juniors to the PRIDE Convention. PRIDE is a leadership opportunity for
juniors across to U.S. to meet and develop leadership skills. This year Oklahoma
was proud to have many of our youth attend. HWO would like to continue this
support. At the meeting we appointed a committee to develop rules for a
scholarship to attend PRIDE. If you have a junior who has never attended or who
would like to attend again, please ask them to contact the Junior Advisors-Ruth
Sims or Donna Curry for more information.
The HWO Scholarship Applications will be available in March. This is a $300
scholarship paid directly to the applicant. If you have a student who is a High
School Senior this year, or is already in college, they may apply for this
scholarship.
On a personal note, I would like to thank the HWO for allowing me the
opportunity to be president these past years. I would like to think that I have
made a difference in our organization, but I really think that the members have
been more of a blessing to me. I have made true friendships, and I am very proud
to be a member of the HWO. Again, thank you for your support and the retiring
president’s gift. Please continue to support the HWO with your membership;
remember we are an organization devoted to the Hereford industry in Oklahoma and
its youth.
— Belinda Sutterfield, Past-President HWO
HWO President’s Letter
Greetings and Happy
New Year to my fellow Oklahoma Hereford enthusiasts. 2008 is going to be a great
year and I look forward to serving as your HWO President. I am honored and
humbled to represent this wonderful organization. The HWO has a proud heritage
of being the first state women’s organization to merge the two separate Polled
and Horned women’s groups.
Being a positive example for our junior members is important to help our
Oklahoma juniors reach their full potential. The purpose of the HWO is to
support our junior members with college scholarships, the Queen and Princess
programs and awards at the State Fair of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Youth Expo, and
Tulsa State Fair.
Each and every membership to the HWO is important. As a past board member of the
American Hereford Women and member of both the AHW and National Organization of
Pollettes, I encourage you to become members of the HWO, NOP and AHW.
Currently Oklahoma has board members on both the AHW and NOP national boards.
Donna Curry, McAlester, Okla. was elected to the AHW board in October and Susan
Gebhart is the NOP Treasurer.
The HWO wants your comments, feedback, and your time and talents as well. Come
and get involved! I look forward to this New Year. 2008 IS GOING TO BE GREAT!
Best Regards,
Sherry Pope-Smith, HWO President
